Pop Girl Groups, Then & Now

The 1990s was a hot decade for pop and R&B girl groups, and years later, those girls are now women--some are even married with children. See what some of the biggest girl groups of the '90s look like today, and learn how they soared, disbanded, and reunited--and maybe starred in a reality show or two along the way.

TLC

Superstar R&B/hip-hop trio TLC was a force to be reckoned with in the '90s, with a diamond-selling album, CrazySexyCool, and omnipresent singles like “Waterfalls” and “No Scrubs.” The Grammy-winning group (Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas) hit the highest heights, but struggled with a fair share of problems. T-Boz revealed that she suffered from sickle-cell disease; the volatile Lopes feuded with the group and made headlines for setting fire to her boyfriend’s mansion in 1994; and the group even filed bankruptcy in 1995. Then in 2002, shortly after the girls took a break to pursue solo interests, Lopes was tragically killed in a car crash while shooting a documentary in Honduras. Surviving members Watkins and Thomas later both starred in their own reality shows and continued to sporadically record and perform together; they recently announced plans for a new TLC album, tour, and biopic in 2013.

Stars Turning 40

Stars Turning 40

Hollywood's eternal obsession with youth aside (especially for female actresses), a new crop hitting their fourth decade in 2013 are just hitting their stride. Kate Beckinsale, for instance, is among a string of reliable marquee action heroines, Kristen Wiig has made that "SNL"-to-screen transition with triumph, and Neil Patrick Harris has grown up to be the favored all-around guy who can play his own supersized, foul-mouthed, hetero-scoundrel alternate ego. And just because we get a little sentimental around birthdays, we're recognizing lesser luminaries in gratitude for delivering memorable Gen-X onscreen moments.

Oscar's Top 10 Biggest Landslides

Oscaralogists love a suspenseful clash – sometimes the winner is crystal clear. Absolutely no chance of an upset. It seems foolish even to open the envelope at the Oscar ceremony because everyone knows whose name is inside. In recent years, runaways have become quite common. Let's take a look at the Top 10 Biggest Oscar Landslide Victories (in the acting categories) from the past two decades

The pretty woman received two Oscar nominations early in her career, but to many observers they probably seemed like flukes. That was until "Erin Brockovich" debuted in March of 2000, instantly drawing comparisons to Sally Field's award-winning performance in "Norma Rae" more than two decades earlier. Fortunately for the red-haired and red-hot Roberts, voters didn't forget about "Brockovich" at the end of the year, as she earned Best Actress honors from the L.A. Film Critics Assn., the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and SAG. Her film even garnered nominations for Best Picture and Director, making it all the more apparent that Best Actress was Roberts' race to lose. Her competition was quite solid, including strong dramatic work from Ellen Burstyn in "Requiem for a Dream," Laura Linney in "You Can Count on Me" and Joan Allen in "The Contender." Roberts could still count on the Oscar going her way, and it did. As far as most pundits were concerned, Julia was the only real contender.

Amazing Close-up Coral

7 Shows, 7 Countries, 7 Days, 13 Outfits

Rihanna kicked off her highly-anticipated 777 tour (7 concerts in 7 countries over 7 days) in Mexico City. Flying around the globe on a plane full of over 150 exhausted and mutinous press and fans (who later became the tour's biggest story--just search #RihannaPlane on Twitter!), she’s performed a whirlwind of concerts and plowed through outfits at lightening speed. Here, we break down Mexico City, Toronto, Stockholm, Berlin, London, Paris, and New York.

Rihanna upon boarding #RihannaPlane - Generally, public displays of sweatpants don't get my endorsement, but fitted, monochrome black ones styled with neon-detailed sneakers and lots of sparkly, substantial jewelry get a pass.

Best Celebrity Makeunders

Sometimes less is more—as is the case with our favorite stars. When you're as gorgeous as today’s top celebrities, why mask your beauty with over-styled hair, piled-on makeup, and flashy outfits? While we usually see these ladies glammed out to the max on the red carpet, their more natural looks are often their absolute best. Here our favorite stars prove sometimes less is more.

Lady Gaga - The Fame Monster deliberately enjoys freaking people out with her appearance on a regular basis. At the 2010 Grammys, her freaky two-toned blond wig and drag queenish makeup was much too much. We prefer her more retro liner and strong brows like she wore in London this October.

Stars Who Got Their Start At Sundance

Some actors get lucky—they’re spotted by famous directors or land network television gigs right after they move to Hollywood. Most, though, have to work at it, so we’re grateful for indie movies and film festivals like Sundance. Thanks to the critics and audiences of Sundances past, we have these now-famous actors and actresses that worked their way out of obscurity and onto the big screen.

Abigail Breslin - Yes, she was the cute little girl from "Signs" long before her Sundance smash performance as Olive in "Little Miss Sunshine," but the dark family comedy is the film that made her a star. "Little Miss Sunshine" premiered in 2006 at the festival and went on to garner two Oscar nominations--including one for the pint-sized starlet. Now 16, expect to see Breslin looking all grown up in "The Call" and "Ender's Game" this year.

Most events since the inception in 1978 were from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal, but due to security threats in Mauritania, which led to the cancellation of the 2008 rally, the 2009 Dakar Rally was run in South America (Argentina and Chile). It was the first time the race took place outside of Europe and Africa. It has stayed in South America from 2009 to the present (2013). The race is open to amateur and professional entries.
